Meta-PokéBase Q&A

Hey all. I've written another refresh of the rules page, which I'm handing over to the other staff and the wider community for review in this thread.

The goals for this update are as follows:

  1. Carry over the changes we decided upon in the 2022-23 thread, which Pokemaster never committed to the official page.
  2. Increase clarity and simplify some areas that are a bit overwrought (especially the current #1.4, #1.6, and #1.7).
  3. Decrease wordiness. I want this to be as straightforward and common sense as possible.

Have a read below and run your own comparison to the current page. Let me know if you think it's an improvement overall and what changes you'd like to see.

I'm tired of waiting for Pokemaster to review our changes, so I'm going to say that in future, whatever this thread says (and anything we settle upon in our discussions) will go in terms of moderation standards.

If you're reading this Pokemaster, are you comfortable putting the rules in a meta thread and linking that with the rules button instead? If you don't like what you read one day, you can tell us off and roll it back.

About your question about the RMT rules below, I think the wording of the RMT rules is fine the way it is worded in this post. I think the issue is that a lot of people completely neglect to read them before posting. I think we should just put a clearly visible banner at the top of the RMT section saying something to the effect of "Read rules before posting, in-game teams not allowed" or something like that.
"whatever this thread says (and anything we settle upon in our discussions) will go in terms of moderation standards."

So the site links new users to an outdated set of rules? How are they supposed to know what's written on the actual "Rules" tab isn't accurate? No new user will know how to navigate Meta to find the actual rules. I don't think asking PM to link to this thread will work very well if he's been missing for the past few months.
I’ll send pm an email with all this stuff in a hot second. I’ll subject it something dramatic to get his attention.
In the meantime, when we close posts under the new rules, we can do “closed with note: see comment” and in a comment we can link to this page and be like “hi! Our rules page is outdated; please see the linked thread for further information as to why we closed your post” or something.
And when people link new users to the rules on their walls, we just link here instead. Would be a bit of extra work, but nothing unmanageable.
@Amethyst I'm asking Pokemaster to make a new thread to put the rules in. I don't want him to link this one.
I don't think these rules are functionally different enough to where it's an issue if we use them now. The only thing we'd close with these rules which we wouldn't otherwise are RMT threads.

Welcome to the Pokémon Knowledgebase, or PokéBase for short! On this platform, you can ask and answer questions about Pokémon. The best answers receive votes and rise to the top of the page, making useful information and advice easy to access.

PokéBase is not a traditional forum — questions should be answerable, not discussed endlessly. This rules page will help you get familiar with the platform. Please read it thoroughly before starting! We've also put together a comprehensive starter's guide that we highly recommend reading.

The community is based around four sections, which are addressed in turn below.

  • PokéBase: The main area for general questions about Pokemon. (PokéBase is sometimes used to refer to the entire community area.)
  • Rate My Team (aka RMT): The place to post competitive battling teams, movesets, and TCG decks.
  • Meta: The place to ask questions about this site itself, make suggestions and report errors.
  • Chat room: For live chat about Pokemon and any off-topic discussion.

Note that this rules list is new as of 2024 — many topics are handled differently than in the past. There are links to several additional questions/posts that give more detailed information.

#0. Site-wide rules

#0.1. Usual "netiquette" applies. Be kind to other people. Post in good faith and stay on-topic. No bigotry. Don't abuse privileges. Keep content PG. Accept constructive criticism. Don't post people's personal information, including your own.

#0.2. Put care and effort into your posts. Both your questions and answers should be detailed and properly researched. Write using proper English, and use formatting tastefully (e.g. don't bold your entire post).

#0.3. Use clear question titles and tags. For example, "How did this happen?" is vague, but "How did Slurpuff outspeed Greninja?" is clear and concise. Include tags for the main elements in your question — if you're not sure, include the game or generation that applies.

#0.4. Use your own words. Don't mass copy-paste from other websites or AI. You may include quotes, but make sure you reference them and include your own writing. When reasonable, avoid posting links as answers.

#0.5. Post in the right area. Posts made in the wrong section will be hidden. Use comments instead of answers to reply to others. Post different questions in their own separate threads. Create new threads instead of posting questions as comments.

#0.6. Full answers in the answer box. Each answer should be an attempt at completely resolving the question. If you only know one part of the answer, post a comment instead. If you're posting an updated answer, make sure it also includes the original info, where relevant.

#0.7. No duplicate posts. To keep content organised, we will remove any question that is the same as an existing one, or covered in the common repeat topic list or starter's guide. If the existing question has no satisfactory answer, report it here. If you post on a question that is answered already, make sure your answer is better or adds something new.

#0.8. Official Pokémon games and media only. No fan games. Don't ask for cheats and don't recommend cheating to others. Don't ask about unusual behaviour if you used mods, cheats, or an emulator. Don't link to ROMs. Otherwise, we're quite permissive of custom tools (e.g. Wiimmfi, PKHeX, CFW) where relevant. Pokémon Showdown! is another exception.

#0.9. No excessive use of images. Use images only to make posts easier to read or understand. If you have a large image (>500 pixels in length), link it normally instead of embedding it. Please only use standard sprites on popular posts, like the moveset questions. You can find these in our sprites area.

#0.10. Don't make more than one account. Staff can see accounts that break this rule. Please read this post for more information, especially if you know somebody personally who uses PokéBase.

#0.11. Respect the voting system. Vote based on the contents of each post — don't be spiteful. Don't vote the same person repeatedly. Don't ask for up-votes (or ask not to be down-voted). Earn points honestly.

#0.12. Let staff handle the rules. Please don't instruct other people on what they may do here. If something is amiss, it's best to leave a flag, or message us directly. Don't answer rule-breaking questions, and don't derail questions discussing whether they are allowed.

#0.13. Avoid flooding. Don't post many similar questions all at once. Avoid posting on "What is a good moveset...?" questions (for example) so fast that it fills the front page.

#1. PokéBase (main section) rules

The main section is green. It is for asking questions about anything in the Pokémon franchise, with a focus on the games.

#1.1. No opinion questions, polls, or discussion threads. PokéBase is for answerable questions, not endless discussions. The focus should be on sharing knowledge and advice. Topics like "What should I name my Pokémon?" can be taken to the chat room or a different website.

#1.2. Include specific details when asking questions. For example, if you ask "Which Pokémon is better?", then you need to explain what the purpose is. Are you doing a playthrough? If so, which game? If competitive, what format? If you're asking about an unusual behaviour in your game, include pictures or steps to reproduce.

#1.3. Don't ask for trades, Friend Codes, and the like. It doesn't belong on this platform. You can try the chat room, our Discord and Pokemon Showdown servers, or another website.

#1.4. Do basic research before posting. For example, don't ask questions requesting plain statistics, like what level Piplup evolves at. Similarly, please double-check the accuracy of your answers and include links to references where needed. Don't post silly guesses like "Your game glitched!"

(Exception: If an accurate answer cannot be found on our database, then it is OK to ask the question.)

#1.5. Don't ask "What is a good moveset...?" or "What is a good team...?" questions (or any variation of them). This applies even when new releases occur. These are special questions managed by staff, to keep them organised. You can suggest new team/moveset questions using this thread.

#1.6. No questions about your team. We find our advice conflicts too often with personal preferences for these to have value. Instead, ask general questions like "Easiest way to beat Totem Lurantis in S/M?" and "Aggron or Golem for Emerald playthroughs?". Competitive teams can be posted on the RMT section.

#1.7. Questions should have a precise focus. For example, "What are some facts about Cyndaquil?" and "How do I beat X/Y?" are too vague/open-ended for this site. Other questions like "How do I get started playing VGC?" are broad, but still welcome since there is a specific topic/problem we can help with.

#1.8. No theorising questions. We will close questions like "Why can Wooper learn Ice Punch?" and "Will there be a game in Mexico?" if they can't be answered without insider knowledge. Also be mindful of hypothetical scenarios, like "Would Mega Flygon be good?"

#1.9. Questions should specifically relate to Pokémon. Don't ask why your 3DS doesn't work, what game you should buy your cousin for Christmas, what your merch is worth, etc. Questions should ask for information from the Pokémon franchise.

#1.10. No hyper-individualised questions. For example, "What are all the routes with Ace Trainers on them?" and "What Pokemon would suit my fanfic?" and "How do I beat Platinum with only Skitty?" are unlikely to be relevant for other people.

#1.11. New threads must actually be questions. For example, "Why does Sword/Shield suck???" is a rant, not a question. Also, avoid posting guides as questions; the content is very welcome but follow this process instead.

The staff reserve the right to curate content on this site. We will make calls on low-quality posts not covered by these rules where we see fit.

One observation is this is a fair bit longer than the current rules. I think clarity is more important than brevity (hence splitting the current #1.4), and I'm happy to spell out obvious things (e.g. "be nice") if it helps set the tone for the community. Interested in whether people think this is too much.
I love the new rules. Clear, precise, and to the point. Has my stamp of approval, and I can’t wait to use them.
My biggest issue with this post is still rule 1.10 because I don't think there's really a way to tell how "relevant" a question is when it follows all the other rules.
#0.8: What are some examples of PKHeX and CFW being relevant if people shouldn't ask about unusual behaviours or recommend cheats?

#1.9: I disagree that merch appraisal doesn't have a place on this site. If it's Pokemon related, it should be fine on Pokebase.
@sumwun: So should the rule not exist? Do you have a different way to word it?

#0.8: https://pokemondb.net/pokebase/428532 Maybe I will reword that.
#0.9: Is merch appraisal really Pokemon related? Even so, I'd rather teach people to do their own research with a CRQ thread. Those questions are invariably awful. We could make an entirely separate rule explaining what we want people to include in them.
Merch appraisal shouldn’t be allowed in my opinion. It varies way too much based off of region and currency, and condition of the item. We aren't pros, and there's reddit threads for that.
I bought all Gen 2 games for $100 total, which would baffle every American, as Crystal itself goes for like $300 in America. Yet it was only “worth” $30 here. How can one answer that a game is worth $30 and $300 at the same time? Even if we asked for a specific location, it would still vary. in my province, since it's so huge, down south it would be $250, but again, i got it got like $20USD equivalent.  It’s too complicated and changes constantly. I'm positive that if this logic applies to games, it would apply to merch, too.
Merch is only worth what people are willing to pay.
People here are always listing Pokemon merch for what it's selling for on ebay, and it never gets sold here. they eventually put it on sale for more than half, since no one is buying it here.
Anyone can look on ebay and see what the market is. If they aren't old enough to know how to look for what something is selling for, they probably shouldn't be on the site.
We could totally make a thread like "How to find out what my merch is worth?" with like links to ebay and that one card site that shows the selling prices of cards, but I think that should be the extent of it.
@Amethyst I think we should just ban questions that ask for help with using third party tools. Stuff like "what would happen if I generate a Pokemon with [unobtainable trait] and use it in battle?" or "I just received a [Pokemon] generated with [tool], what do I do now?" should be fine.
@Fizz I think that rule shouldn't exist. We probably should just ban questions about the asker's specific team or some custom competitive format that only the asker and one other person are playing.
Will run through this with some rewording soon.
Adding onto the discussion around third-party tools, I feel the rules should be relaxed in this area if the tools are meant to help you with the official Pokemon games. I think that rule exists because a) we can't be expected to be experts in every fan game or emulation bug, and b) it covers Pokemaster's ass. So it doesn't serve its purpose banning things that players of the official games might know about (replacement servers, PKHeX, RNG tools, save file management, etc) and that Nintendo/TPC historically lets pass. If that makes any sense, I'll put it in the rule itself.

Out of interest @sumwun, do you take issue with 1.10 only because it's hard to set standards for, or because the content is worthwhile to have?

#2. RMT section rules

The RMT (Rate My Team) section is orange. It is for open-ended feedback on competitive teams and TCG decks. Competitive movesets can also be rated here.

#2.1. Include ALL of the following details when posting teams. This helps us give useful feedback.

  1. Specify the item, ability, precise EVs, nature, and moves for each Pokémon.
  2. State the battle format that applies to the team (for example, Gen 5 OU). Very obscure formats and any defined by the author are not allowed.
  3. For each Pokémon, give at least two proper sentences of explanation. Specify why you chose the Pokémon and explain the strategy for the set.
  4. Include a full, legal team for the format you specify. If the team is incomplete, include sets and descriptions for the Pokemon you're considering.
  5. Include the team in the post itself, not just PokePaste. Descriptive titles are helpful (e.g. "Gen 8 LC, Pawniard offence" instead of "Rate my LC team").

For TCG decks, specify the format (Standard, Expanded, etc.), a full set of cards (including the expansion and number for each), an explanation of the strategy, and whether you're playing online or in person. Note any issues with availability.

#2.2. Competitive teams only. This means teams for winning serious matches or climbing the ladder. We also allow teams for post-game battle facilities like the Battle Tower. However, you must keep to a "competitive" standard, which means:

  1. Do not post gimmicks and novelties, like theme teams, troll teams, teams of favourites, etc.
  2. Be open to any changes that will help you win. For example, if you play a format that allows legendaries, then you must be willing to use legendaries.
  3. Know teambuilding 101 — your team should show an awareness of the battle format you're playing and what strategies are likely to work. If you're a new player, please read this post before posting on the RMT section.

#2.3. High-quality advice only. Explain your suggestions so that other people can learn. Responses should critique the team and give ideas for changes. Don't suggest your own team instead. If you're not an experienced competitive player, please don't post advice.

#3. Meta section rules

The Meta section is grey. It is for reporting errors, making suggestions, improving the database, and other community matters.

#3.1. Be specific. Use descriptive titles and include direct URLs, screenshots, and which browser/device you're using (e.g. Chrome browser on a PC, Safari on an iPhone) when describing errors.

#3.2. Use the mega-threads. We have dedicated pages for certain topics to help organise the section; please use them instead of making new threads. In particular, the minor errors thread is where small factual errors should be posted.

#3.3. Use an appropriate tag. Please make sure to include any of these tags on the question where appropriate: pokemondb if asking about the main site, pokebase if asking about the Q&A community, suggestion for site suggestions, or bug if reporting an larger error.

#3.4. Posts should relate to this site or the community. On-topic discussion threads are welcome, but Meta isn't a general-purpose Pokemon forum or a blog. Content like this should be taken to the chat room or a different platform.

Any ideas to make RMT rules more successful are appreciated. I think #2.1 may need to be split because people see the chunk of text and then switch their brain off.
#2.1.2: Do we need to define "very obscure formats"?

#2.3: Maybe put "When answering" at the start of the sentence? It helps transition the discussion from questions (2.1, 2.2) to answers.
I've been tossing up whether to define "very obscure formats" as "anything that never had a permanent Showdown ladder", but that's wordy and annoying to keep track of, and also creates coupling with PS I don't really like. Sometimes a vague wording works to keep it simple.
Otherwise, yeah I think the whole section needs restructuring so it's more skimmable. Will do soon.
